What Now?

Well, for all of you wondering (as we are) we are still pretty much on track for what’s expected. Now that we have a baby waiting for us, and a pretty face to go with our idea of her, it’s hard to wait. She’s a real person and we real-ly want to hold her, take care of her and introduce her to her big brother, family and friends. So, it’s hard to wait.

At the same time, we’re barely ready for her—-her room needs some serious organizing! And maybe, at some point, we need to get her something to wear. Good heavens!

So, here’s what they told us to expect: After receiving her NOC (which we did September 12), her case goes to the courts. There have been delays because the judge is new and then the courts were closed for a national holiday that lasted a couple of weeks. There’s surely another one of those around the corner so maybe the judge will make fast decisions! At the court, they go over all the documents and make sure everything is in order and legal and signed and notarized, etc., etc. Then they issue guardianship. We were told that this all could take 30-45 days or longer. That would make it Oct. 12 at the earliest or the 27th at the latest. So, we’re still right in there. If they were talking business days (some of the estimates said business days, this one didn’t, but who knows—and they are just estimates, anyway), it would be Oct. 24 – Nov. 14.

When I told people we might go by the end of December, I think I used business days for most estimates.

Then the people at the facility where Tess is submit papers to the U.S. Consulate in Kolkata to get her passport started (which we will finish when we go to Delhi). This takes 30-45 business days.

The papers that the court issued get sent to the adoption agency who makes copies for our government stuff and then we file the final part of our I-600. And the agency lets us know what’s left before we make travel arrangements.

In the meantime, we’re trying to get our Visas to travel to India. And we’re waiting. Hope to have information soon to share with you!

Since I wrote the above, another Indian holiday has come and gone with the courts closing and opening. The latest word from the agency is that there is no latest word. Comforting. The good news is that we have done some cleaning and organizing around the house and, although she still has nothing to wear, we do have a space to for her to call her own.
